I was just in the music store the other day and the oboes caught my eye. I had played for 5 years but put it down after my first year of high school because my teacher was incompetent. Three years later I am looking to picking it back up, but I do not have an oboe. Any suggestions as to what is a good quality midrange oboe. I'm pretty much going for a "bang for the buck" midlevel oboe. Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

All around, its hard to beat Yamaha. I don't know if they make oboes (I'd assume so). However, in my experience, Yamaha's intermediate stuff tends to hold its own better than many companies. I'd take a Yamaha over a Bach for trumpets, for instance.

Make sure you try a few out, if possible!

It's a strange instrument with a strange tone.
Very hypnotic. I hardly see it used other than for classical music or film scores though.
Any good exemple of contemporary oboe music ?
Who are the masters of the instrument ?

Not quite sure I could help with the contemporary masters of the oboe. I think I want to brush up on my classical oboe playing and then start to interject some of it into my songs. It would certainly bring a very hypnotic feel to have playing very delicately in the backround of certain songs.
Sunburst, thanks for the reccomendation, I very much appreciate it.

Jazz- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oboe

Some lists there, including some non-classical and non-jazz oboe music.

My wife has a midlevel Fox oboe that does a decent job. She's principle in a few of our local concert bands. Its made of plastic. She sometimes wishes she would have sprung for a wooden one, but a wood one was reasonably cost prohibitive when she bought it. I think she paid around $2400. Heres a link to Woodwind BRasswind -
