This is a Dan Armstrong Blue Clipper Clone with a distortion level control added, built mainly with scavenged parts on perfboard. It's very simple in design. Strangly enough, it's one of my most favorite overdrives.

Upper left, fuzzface clone

Below, weird octave/no octave fuzz with lots of extra things

Bottom a cool NPN/PNP/NPN/PNP fuzz I came up with

Second column back, a fuzz that can sound like an amp switching off

Below, a cascoded version of the Fuzzface. Just an idea I had

In the bee-baa box, an octave fuzz where you can keep the lows octave free

Other old mutant fuzzes (not sure what is in there)

the other one is photoshop. ;)

my parts should be here soon, I'm gunna be building a bunch of different projects off runoffgroove. The tube reamer, the whisker, the fetzer, the trem, the tweed, and a few others I can't remember. Also I want to make a LPB and a few "combo" pedals like your fuzz lab only less insane.

That Fuzzlab is possibly the coolest pedal I've seen in my life. How much did it all cost to put together?

I'm looking at making a Muff Fuzz clone soon, I've got a lot of spare time and figured I should do something useful. Just a matter of finding the bits around here .

It cost way too much to build :)

For the Muff Fuzz, be sure to check out the General Guitar Gadgets (http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=27&Itemid=52) page--lots of good info on building it, mods, etc. They have a really good PCB also.

I'm curious about that Fuzz Lab. Do you find you use many of the settings, or have you mostly found what you like?

I've sort of settled on a few combinations that I think sound really good:

Rangemaster + Boost -> Fuzz Face with Si/Ge hybrids. That's pretty much the classic fuzz sound.

Clean Boost -> Big Muff PI with the gain close to max and voltage at about 6 volts. Sustains for days on end.

The Tonebender is the circuit I could have done without. Since it is basically a fuzz face clone with one more gain stage, it didn't add much to the overall unit.

The Green Ringer stays on *all* the time, regardless of other settings. It is like the magic ingredient that sits at the end of the fuzz chain and makes everything sound harmonically richer and thicker. I love it so much, I'm building another one as a single pedal so I can try different combinations.

Finally, these are my favorite settings. I've had a couple of friends play through the Fuzzlab and their preferences turn out to be quite a bit different than mine. The only thing everybody has agreed on so far is the clean boost/bmp/ringer--it sounds good to everyone.

Cool! Thanks for the detailed reply.

I'm hoping to start working on an octave pedal this summer, so I'll have to remember the boost, BMP, octave combo. Of course, that means I'll need to get a BMP... (or at least build that BYOC fuzz face I bought the board for)

Looks very cool. Also looks a lot like my first DIY pedal.

1. Long wires--I did that too until I realized that my fuzz clone squealed like a pig. I went back and redid all the wires once it was in the enclosure to get the lengths to a minimum.

2. Lots of extra holes--yep did that too: Drill hole. Doh! The pot won't fit there! Try again. In the end, I justified the extra hole s by claiming they were for ventilation :)

3. Those guitar knobs are too cool--it is so obvious, but I never would have thought to use them.

Great work. What's your next project?

Thanks~ I never think it looks cool LOL!

My second project is a MOSFET booster and it is already finished in a wooden box, I think i would make some pic tonight. I bought the wooden box in Thailand for just US$1. Cheap!

Drilling hole is so hard! I remember I drilled the box before my dinner and after drilling all the holes I can't pickup the chopstick to eat!!!

-HR Muff N Stuf-- Stock Muff, Russian Muff and a Rat in one box
-Trem De La Trem-- Tremulus lune with Add LFO
--South Park dude (no name)-- Tweak O Fuzz (first project)
--Chunderthief (Zappa pic)-- Thunderchief
--Green Ringer-- put it in a CD spool just for yucks. Screwed up the drilling, but don't care, that just adds to the lofi charm.
--EchoFlex-- Rebote 2 Delay with effects loop on delays only.

Those are the ones that are boxed or interesting to look at.

I'll take one tonight, but prepare to be underwhelmed. I just drilled a couple of holes in it and stuck it in there loosely.

I made it because I had the parts on hand, not because I particularly wanted one, and didn't want to waste an expensive enclosure on it.

Got it from a local B&Q hardware store, called 'brilliant metalic copper' http://www.plasti-kote.co.uk/Site/productsdetail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=16#

I believe they go under the name of Valspar in the US? :)

Sure. Keith at BYOC was the inspiration for this.

Check out his Super Tricked Out Fuzz - No Circuit Board Required (http://board.buildyourownclone.com/viewtopic.php?t=1132)

I can't take credit for the Rat, it's based on artwork of the original 10 Rats. Mine is a little different, but it turned out o.k. How much were you selling your Cricket Amps for? Thanks! Glossy sticker paper on an ink-jet. Super simple. I sanded the enclosure with various grits of sandpaper and then polished the whole thing with aluminum billet polish. A quick wipe-down with acetone, apply the sticker, and then a couple of coats of clear poly.

question:
how does the thunderchief sound?...

L_Z_nut
11-02-2006, 08:43 PM
This thread really should be stickied, I had a hell of a time finding it.

My first DIY pedal, I guess I pretty much completed building my Tycobrahe Octavia clone.... besides painting on the name, controls, jacks. It's working great now, and has no more sound problems... the DC jack needed to be isolated from the enclosure, an easy fix, but not soo easy to figure out with my limited experience.

I got all the info, and the PCB from general guitar gadgets, and my parts from smallbear, and some local places.

I'm calling it "the big Ohh!"

Here are some pics:

guts:
http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/6342/fotkaphpha6.th.jpg (http://img63.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fotkaphpha6.jpg)

gut shot:
http://img277.imageshack.us/img277/4695/fotka2phpdc5.th.jpg (http://img277.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fotka2phpdc5.jpg)

Everything installed
http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/548/fotkaphpld5.th.jpg (http://img516.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fotkaphpld5.jpg)

What I want it to look like all painted, the purple will be much darker. If some of you have any suggestions for the painting scheme, or even position and everything please speak up, all comments, criticism is accepted. I'll probably use some kind of model car paint or something like that, I don't like the way nailpolish looks somethimes.

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/5226/fotka1phpyc0.th.jpg (http://img441.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fotka1phpyc0.jpg)

I guess it's pretty good for a first pedal, I wish that some of my drilling could've been more symetrical, but I'm pretty happy with the end product, and it sounds fantastic... I wish I knew how to host some sound clips.... no matter what I do the clips get hosted, but never work.

Thanks for reading.

Holy crap!!

All these beautifull (well, almost all) creations with their great cosmetics have one thing in common....

Get rid of that ugly white washer around that switch. It's even less original than using a bleu LED.

Btw, for sale,
Quite a lot of white washers. Never used.

How about a "battle worn" pedal with a black washer ? :)
