View Full Version : Am I creating a problem?

My band plays small clubs for the most part. We sometimes have 1/3 of the stage blocked by our JBL Mpro Subs and High Packs. To save room both on the truck and on the stage, I put a couple of pole sockets into the tops of the high pack speakers (they are 15"-2 way spkrs), and have been mounting the speakers on a short piece of pipe on top of the speakers. Now I'm wondering if the bass vibrations from the sub, running up the pole will drastically shorten the life of my bulbs?
Anyone else done this or have any ideas about the vibration affecting the life of the bulbs? They are 38's and 56's.

Duh, I'm an idiot. I mean that I'm putting the LIGHTS on the short piece of pipe that's on top of the speakers...not 'speakers' on top of the speakers...
Sorry...

all logic tells me that this could be a problem. not nesesscalily shortening the life of your lamps but something could rattle lose and possibly fall.

Nah, the lights or the mounts won't rattle loose. I used the deep socket mounts, and the pipe on top of the speakers only sticks up another foot. It's sturdy, and doesn't add much weight to the speaker. The Mpro's are lightweight plywood boxes anyway, not made out of the heavier composite board or MDF.
I'm a trained rigger, and I put safety first before designing this system.

I suspect the lamps life will be reduced as that little filament in those Par lamps are quite breakable when hot. The lamps can easily crack as well which is a problem if they are vibrating against the metal lamp housing.. To be avoided although I doubt it will blow all the lamps during a show.

+1

Do a test. Run the lights on top of those cabs and see if they blow sooner than a light rack not mounted on the speakers. Do it for a couple of rehearsals.
