I have a dual 2.0 G5

I purchased a Western Digital serial ata raptor hard drive and it wouldn't mount. I called Western Digital and they sent me a new one... The new one mounted and I was able to zero all data and reformat the drive.. Now this 2nd ata drive they sent mounts but then it stops working and unmounts... I go to disk util and it doesn't see it.

I wonder if its my computer?

Doesn't sound like it. To be fair, I'm one of those anit-WD folk, but there's any number of reasons for why this could be occuring.
My first thought was jumper settings...are they correct? And then my second thought is: did you do permissions repair before and after installing the drive?

I was told the jumper settings were on 1 like it comes stock... I was told to remove the jumper...
same thing no dice... I zeroed out the harddrive then i did a first aid to make sure all went well.. It will mount the stop in the middle of a session.. Plus my fire wire 800 is running as fast as my WD.
The WD should be kicking the FW 800's ass since it's a 10,000 rpm serial ata! I guess it's running poorly when it runs as well.

You'd kinda wonder....the chances are pretty slim you'd get 2 bad drives in a row.

It's gotta be some kind of setting or something....

yeah you are right... The first drive I bought didn't mount at all... the bummer is I didn't get to put the hard drive in till a few months after I got it.. I can't return it. So they sent a new one that was fine at first it checked great but now it's being tempermental... I wish I had another drive to test with.

Why are you zeroing the drives? You really don;t need to do that on a drive with nothing on it. A simple format is more than adequate.

Have you tried booting off of a OS X install disc and using disk utility from there? Just a thought.

Well WD had me zero and reformat. No I haven't tried booting off the OSX install disk.

Nope! I'm pissed... There's always something getting in the way of recording... I'm sure it will all pan out.. I'm going to check and see if its Mac issue.. I'm taking it in maybe the sata cable is messed up

I bought two Fujitsu drives that failed in one year. Sometimes there are duff batches. I would check with the manufacturer to see if they have had any bad batches recently..!

Best of luck dude.. Mac's and new HD's have always been a real breeze for me, other than the Fujitsu's...

I have to agree with this. I have never had problem like the ones you are having. It has always been as simple as plugging in and formatting. That is it.

My suggestion is get your hands on a different brand. Of course this may be prhibitively expensive for you, but if it is possible, by a seagate and see if the problem still exists. Try to narrow down the problem a bit more.
